One must first be familiar with the following terminologies before one can truly comprehend the basics of day trading rules for pattern day traders: day trading, day trader, and pattern day trader, maintenance margin, and day trading buying power.
• Day trading refers to the buying and selling of securities, such as stocks, on the same day.
• Day trader is a person who buys and sells securities within the same day.
• Pattern day trader is a person who enters and exits a day trade at least four times within a five business day period.
• Maintenance margin is the term for the minimum amount of equity or collateral necessary to preserve a margin account.
• Day trading buying power is simply the amount of equity in your account at the close of business of the prior day, minus the maintenance margin requirement.
After learning the basic terminologies that relate to day trading, a person can now dissect the very essence of day trading rules for pattern day traders.
The Pattern Day Trading (PDT) Rule, also known as the FINRA (NASD) Rule 2520, took effect on September 28, 2001. According to the rule, an equity balance worth $25,000 (or more) must be maintained in order to qualify in pattern day trading business. In addition, the smallest amount of equity needed must be in the account of the trader before any day trading transaction and must stay there for at least two business days after the day trade. If the required equity is not maintained, the pattern day trader will have to produce $25,000 worth of equity again so he can be allowed to day trade.
The rule also increases day trading purchasing power to up to four times the pattern day trader’s maintenance margin excess at the close of business of the previous day. As per PDT rule, all pattern day traders cannot generate a trade much more than their day trading buying power. Not following the rule will make brokerage firms issue a margin call, where a pattern day trader is given five business days to produce enough funds to fulfill the call. Those who fail to meet their special maintenance margin calls will be permitted to execute transactions only on a cash available basis for 90 days or until the special maintenance margin call is met.
There are plenty of risks associated with day trading. This rule, in general, was implemented so that pattern day traders can deposit and maintain certain levels of equity in their accounts – enough to support the risky nature of the business.
QUINDI, PER FARE UN ESEMPIO CONCRETO:
PRENDI SPY:
ESEMPIO 1
OGGI APRI UN IRON CONDOR (4 CONTRATTI DI OPZIONE)
DOMANI (O FRA UNA SETTIMANA O FRA UN MESE) CHIUDI L'IRON CONDOR
==> TUTTO OK
ESEMPIO 2
